What Home Means to Me Poster Contest Since 2008, this contest has recognized the amazing, poignant art of children who live in affordable housing across the country. Each piece of art visually shares the child’s thoughts on what their home means to them. Each year, hundreds of children, ages 5-18, participate in the contest. Their heartfelt messages about their homes underscore the importance of the work that housing and community development professionals do. The final contest, conducted in Washington, D.C., is the culmination of numerous poster contests held by public housing authorities all across the United States. Three judges choose 13 winners from hundreds of entries to be featured in NAHRO’s “What Home Means to Me” calendar. All winners receive cash prizes. The grand prize winner, whose art is featured on the calendar cover, will also receive a trip to NAHRO’s Washington Conference to meet our membership and his/her Congressional representatives.~ NAHRO Opp Housing Authority resident Chynna Carpenter was selected as one of the 13 winners from the hundreds of posters that were submitted nationwide. Chynna wrote about What Home Means to Me- “Home means a lot to me. One thing that is important about my home is my family. They mean everything to me from playing games, helping each other and having time together. We have memories together. We are a very active family from having a college football player, a basketball player, softball player, a hardworking mama and a pageant girl. You can walk into our home and see all the memories we have made. I love my family and my house”. Chynna is an 8-year-old that attends Opp Elementary School. She is a very smart, loving and a pageant girl. She loves to participate with community activities and she and her sister are the entrepreneurs of CJ’s Lemonade Stand. This is the first time that Opp Housing Authority’s youth has advanced to the National NAHRO level and had a winner. Chynna is the daughter of Terryca Lacey of Opp. Opp Housing Authority and the Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities are extremely proud of Chynna.
